Councilmember Hugo A. Argumedo has dedicated nearly three decades of distinguished public service to the City of Commerce.

First elected to the Commerce City Council in 1996, Councilmember Argumedo has earned the trust of residents through multiple reelections, including most recently in 2024. Over the years, he has also served as Mayor 6 times during his tenure, providing forward-thinking leadership during pivotal moments in the City’s growth and development.

Councilmember Argumedo has consistently championed initiatives that strengthen both the local economy and the quality of life for Commerce residents. He played a key role in initiating the City’s Education Commission and restructuring the City’s scholarship program, resulting in increased funding for our City and business community to help Commerce students pursue higher education and/or have a competitive edge when entering the workforce. His belief that education and economic opportunity go hand in hand has had a lasting impact on generations of local families.

Recognizing the importance of a strong business environment, Councilmember Argumedo helped spearhead the expansion of the Citadel, doubling the number of stores and creating significant new jobs while generating long-term revenue for the City. He also supported the passage of the Hotel Visitor Tax, which generates an estimated $2.3 million annually to support essential City services such as law enforcement, fire protection, senior services, youth programming, and transportation. His successful negotiation of a new fire services contract saved the City more than $11 million, demonstrating his commitment to fiscal responsibility of public funds.

A strong advocate for public safety and neighborhood engagement, Councilmember Argumedo has long supported community-based policing and the Neighborhood Watch Program, fostering collaboration between residents, businesses, and law enforcement. He has also overseen thoughtful residential development in the Bristow and Veteran Park areas, ensuring that growth in Commerce remains balanced and community focused. In addition, he was a part of the planning that brought the Rosewood Housing Village Townhomes that will ultimately bring 120+ new homes to the City.

Beyond the City, Councilmember Argumedo has represented Commerce at the regional level through his service with the California Contract Cities Association, the I-710 Oversight Policy Committee, the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District, and the Southern California Association of Governments. His leadership in these organizations has amplified Commerce’s voice in broader policy discussions impacting infrastructure, transportation, and economic development.

He is currently an active member of the Evening Lions Club and has also served with numerous community organizations, including the Model City Democratic Club of Commerce, the Commerce Sister City Association, and the Rosewood Park Elementary School PTA, reflecting his belief that meaningful leadership begins with service.

A proud father of six children—four grown and two young—he has always understood the importance of safe neighborhoods and meaningful opportunity. Before retiring from Northrop Grumman after 37 years, he built an illustrious career rooted in hard work and responsibility. Together with his wife, Jessa Argumedo, he remains grounded in the community he has served for nearly 30 years.

Most recently, he received the George Tumanjan Philanthropic Award from the Commerce Business Council for his dedication to improving the quality of life for our community.
