Support for Households in Immigration Emergencies & Legal Defense (SHIELD):

SHIELD will assist Commerce residents in being able to receive their initial consultation from a qualified immigration attorney at no cost. The funds will support the legal services of an immigration law attorney with whom the City has an existing contract with to provide these services to Commerce residents. Appointments only — strictly confidential, no information will be shared with the City.

To inquire or request a virtual or in-person appointment, contact Attorney Ivan Vargas directly at (818) 408-6066.

Rental Assistance for Residents Impacted By Federal Enforcement Activity:

The program will assist Commerce residents who have been financially impacted by federal enforcement activity by providing short-term rental assistance to help prevent housing instability and/or displacement. The funds will support eligible residents with rental costs to help families remain safely housed during times of uncertainty.

Know Your Rights: Get a Red Card Now!

All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution.

A red card is an accessible, powerful resource that offers reminders of the rights of all people in the United States and how to exercise them. If an ICE agent approaches you, you simply show them the card. The card states that you are exercising your rights.

You can pick up a FREE Red Card at City Hall, our libraries, or park community centers. Both English and Spanish Red Cards are available.

Legal Service – How to Avoid Scams

With immigration-related legal services in high demand, there are instances where some are looking to take advantage. Please consider the following when seeking legal services:

  • Only work with a licensed attorney
  • Ask where a lawyer is licensed and for their bar number
  • Notarios are not lawyers and cannot provide legal representation
  • Get everything in writing
  • Do not pay cash (use a cashier’s check if needed)
  • Avoid anyone who is asking for cash
  • Verify lawyers with the State Bar of California (https://www.calbar.ca.gov/)
